In the 2004 campaign season the Bush campaign was paying canvassers $100 ($50 for half a day- 6 hours) a day in American Express Gift cards. I was canvassing a neighborhood and ran into an old friend canvassing for Bush. He showed me the gift cards at the end of the night. All in all, in the 4 days before the election, he made $400 (tax free) canvassing neighborhoods in Palm Beach County Florida.

I should add that many of the people being paid for canvassing were kids in high school, and younger.

Correction: they were American Express Travelers Checks in 2004. (If that makes a difference.)

re: #1 Major Tom

Maybe the campaign & tax laws have changed since 2004.

re: #2 Major Tom

The article made no mention of Givens, the campaign worker, being in high school (or younger). Even if he was, I don't know if it would matter.

I was just sayin... I was so pissed at the time that the Kerry campaign was working us like dogs and (although we were volunteers and never expected compensation) we weren't getting paid. Then I run into this smug SOB and he's telling me he's $400 richer. Exhausted, convinced that Bush was buying his supporters, and upset about the possiblity of losing the election, that stuck with me... That campaign was filled with dirty tactics. The Bushies were holding poles with impalled cabbage patch dolls with red streamers wrapped around them (for blood) with a sign that said 'Kerry's abortion plan,' or something to that effect. I was thoroughly disgusted with their side...

Probably—it's my understanding that travelers checks are the same as cash.

re: #5 Major Tom

Sounds like you had a tough time. Sorry to hear that.
